Stainless Steel
Stainless steel is described as a combined mixture of iron which contains 10 percent of chromium substance. The primary feature of stainless steel is that it does not rust or corrode and blemish as compared to ordinary steel. Stainless steel is also sometimes known as corrosion resistant steel. There are different types of plane and quality of stainless steel which are easily available in the market. The commonly used stainless steel is watch straps or spoons.
Stainless steels have greater resistance to corrosion and rust in man made and natural environments so, it is very essential to choose the right grade and type of stainless steel for a specific purpose. Stainless steel can fight against the great corrosion in air at surrounding temperature and can attain 13 percent chromium and about 26 percent is useful for inconsiderate environments. The oxide coating is tattered which triggers the pieces to join together in case of stainless steel pieces like bolts and nuts are enforced together.
Types of Stainless Steel
Stainless steels are divided according to the crystalline formation in the following ways such as:-
Ferritic Stainless Steels
This type of stainless steel is less durable, greatly corrosion resistant and cannot be hard-edged by heat treatment. It contains about 10.5 – 27 percent of chromium and very less nickel.
Duplex Stainless Steels
This type of stainless steel has a varied composition of ferrite and austenite. It contains certain features like improved strength and resistance to corrosion such as stress corrosion cracking, crevice corrosion and pitting.
Austenitic Stainless Steels
This type of stainless steel consists of about 70 percent of total production of stainless steel. They involve minimum of 16 percent of chromium, maximum of 0.15 percent of carbon and adequate manganese and nickel.
Martensitic Stainless Steels
This stainless steel is very tough and strong, not as corrosion resistant, hardened by heat and highly machineable.
Uses of Stainless Steels
- Stainless Steels are used in the construction of buildings and making other sculptures. It is used in fast food restaurants and diners attribute stainless furniture and fixtures and huge ornamental panels.
- It is useful for architectural blacksmithing.
- Ferritic stainless steel is used for making electric light bulb fiber.
- Martenistic stainless steel is used in munitions and cutlery.
- It is useful for kitchen use, exterior ornament, equipments, public lobbies, doors, hardware and railings.
- Stainless steel is used in curtain wall construction, roofing, gutters, sheathing and flashing.
